General Camp Staff

Day Camp Counselor

General Camp Staff will fill one of the following roles each week. 
  • Group Counselor: live with, play with and supervise 7-10 campers of all abilities.
  • Area Counselor: implement plans for one of the following  areas:  camouflage, creek stomping,  sports, games, art, handicrafts, drama, outdoor discovery, fire building, archery, drama, waterfront/pool, horseback riding, challenge course. Some areas require additional training which is offered prior to camp.
  • Group Floater: provide daily time off for group counselors
  • Inclusive Counselor/Floater: provide one to one or part time support for campers who have disabilities. Additional training required and provided. Only those with this training will fill this role.

​ General Camp Staff Qualifications & Commitment

  • Interest or training in child care/development and camping. 
  • Minimum age: 18
  • One week of training--mandatory; other optional training available
  • Four to eight weeks of camp in addition to the training week. Camp Dates

We have completed our hiring for 2025 for day camp staff.

The Day Camp Counselor is responsible for supervising 7-10 campers of all abilities and leading campers in activities at CYO Camp’s Grasshopper Day Camp in Indianapolis, IN. 

Day camp staff are expected to work all sessions of day camp:
  • Day Camp Staff Training: June 8-10 at Roncalli 
  • Grasshopper Session 1: June 23-27 at Roncalli: Week 4 at Rancho
  • Grasshopper Session 2: July 7-11 at Bishop Chatard: Week 6 at Rancho
  • Grasshopper Session 3: July 14-18 at Bishop Chatard: Week 7 at Rancho
Qualifications & Commitment
  1. Interest or training in child care/development and camping. 
  2. Minimum age: 16
  3. Paid training; June 8-10 (required).
  4. Two weeks of camp in addition to the training.
  5. Multiple positions available

Camp Assistant

  • The Camp Assistant  position is for adults 18 and older who have a disability
  • All Camp Assistants will have an Individualized Work Plan and work with a job coach. Training is “on the job.”
  • The length of employment for this summer camp job will be determined in the hiring process for each individual. Camp Assistants may be employed from 1 to 3 weeks. Weeks do not have to be consecutive. The work week is Sunday-Friday. Camp Assistants may not stay at camp on the weekend.
New Camp Assistant applicants are required to submit an application, provide reference letters, and interview for the position.

Returning Camp Assistant applicants are required to submit an application. Reference letters and an interview are not required for those who have held the Camp Assistant previously.

Leadership & Specialist Positions

Counselor Mentor

Responsibilities 
Supervise and support General Staff daily. Teach, counsel, role model, and evaluate staff. Supervise and assist with campers. Solve problems and troubleshoot situations. Assist in and sleep  in camper cabins as needed. 

Qualifications & Commitment
Ability to teach and model positive staff and camper relations. “Coach” staff on strategies for working with children at camp. Leadership and camp experience.  Minimum age: 21. T
raining: dates TBA; Pre-camp staff training: 1 week; 8 weeks of camp; 4 positions available.

Area Manager

Responsibilities 
Monitor activity areas daily; assist staff as needed. Lead planning meeting for activity areas with staff. Facilitate activity areas with staff and independently. Open and close some areas daily. Inventory and monitor area supplies. Assist with planning and implementing “all camp” activities. Live with and care for campers.

Qualifications & Commitment
Ability to plan/lead camp activities, ability to teach others and model positive staff and camper relations. Camp staff experience preferred. Most work is outdoors. Minimum age: 20. 2 weeks of training; 8 weeks of camp; 1 position available.

Program & Logistics Coordinator

Responsibilities
Schedule camp activities and coordinate staff to complete program prep. Lead and assist with planning and implementing “all camp” activities. Most work is in the office.

Qualifications & Commitment
Ability to make/manage schedules, make changes in the midst of a day due to weather and staffing changes, ability to teach and model. Camp and Excel experience preferred. Minimum age: 19. 2 weeks of training; 8 weeks of camp; 1 position available.

Challenge Course Counselor

Responsibilties
Facilitate low and high ropes activity areas. Participate in “all camp” activities; live with and assist with cabin groups. Will rotate to general staff duties as needed.  

Qualifications & Commitment
Must become a CYO trained facilitator. Training provided through CYO. Experience with challenge courses and children preferred.
Minimum age: 21. 2 weeks of training; 4-8 weeks of camp; 2  positions available. 

Adventure Coordinator

Responsibilities
Implement and supervise the Adventure program which is a teen trip and travel program. Activities include high ropes, canoeing, caving, sailing, pontoon boating (activities subject to change); includes primitive tent camping. Live with and care for campers.

Qualifications & Commitment
Experience with teens and outdoor programming; first aid/CPR certified. Minimum age: 19. 1 ½  weeks of training; 4-8 weeks of camp;  2 positions available.

​​Marketing & Content Creation Coordinator 

Responsibilities
Responsible for capturing and managing media content, including photographing and filming campers and activities, posting daily updates, and creating marketing materials. This role will also assist with logistical tasks, such as organizing and scheduling media projects, and coordinating marketing efforts for camp newsletters and special events. Interns will live in cabins and participate fully in camp life, working with campers and staff.

Qualifications & Commitment
Strong photography and videography skills, with experience using digital cameras (DSLR, GoPro) and editing software. Familiarity with social media platforms and content management systems. Ability to work independently, managing multiple projects and deadlines with minimal supervision. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a passion for youth development. Willingness to live in a communal setting and contribute to camp life. Minimum age: 19; 1 1/2 weeks of training; 8 weeks of camp.

​​Health Care Manager  

Responsibilities 
Work with camp nurses to maintain the health care area, supplies,  and equipment; coordinate the checking in  & dispensing of medication and health related documentation. Provide health care and first aid to staff and campers. Assist in training nurses and staff in health care policy and related topics.

Qualifications & Commitment
First Aid/CPR certified. Other health training is helpful. Camp staff experience preferred. Interest or background in child care and camping. Minimum age: 20; 2 weeks of training; 8 weeks of camp; 1 position available. 

Inclusive Counselor Intern

Responsibilities 
Provide one to one or part time (floating) support for campers who have disabilities.  Support the personal and social growth of campers from diverse backgrounds and abilities. Help build a supportive community where every camper feels valued and included. Additional training required and provided. 

Qualifications & Commitment
Interest or training in child care/development and camping. Experience and/or education in working with people who have disabilities. Minimum age: 18; 2 weeks of training; 4-8 weeks of camp;​ multiple positions available
